Best New Writing accepts unpublished fiction and creative nonfiction under 10,000 words for publication. Manuscripts will be given consideration for the Gover Story Prize. All submissions are reviewed quarterly following the last day of March, June, September, and December. You will receive a response within two weeks of those dates. It is highly recommended that you read a volume of Best New Writing prior to sending your work. It is an inexpensive publication.

Simultaneous submissions cannot be considered. Please, no more than one submission per quarter. This award is for unpublished stories. If your story was previously published, including on-line publications, please do not submit it.

The Gover Story Prize (formerly the Eric Hoffer Award for Prose) exists as a platform to honor short prose of exceptional merit. Winners of the “Gover” are given prizes, honors, and worldwide media exposure. The prizewinners and selected finalists are included in the annual anthology, Best New Writing.

What can be nominated for a Gover Story Prize?
The Gover Story Prize is open to short works of fiction and creative nonfiction of less than 10,00 words. (If it was published on-line, please do not submit it.) Yes, you can nominate your own work. NOTE: Award is closed to the staff of Hopewell Publications and previous Hoffer Award winning entries.

How is prose nominated for a Gover Story Prize?
Anyone (including the author) can submit work for consideration of the Gover Story Prize and inclusion in Best New Writing. (Please, no more than one submission per trimester.) To nominate, submit your work electronically. Hopewell Publications will be acquiring first publication and one-time anthology rights. Submissions must be received by March 31st of the award year. Submissions are read three times per year following the last day of April, August, and December. You will receive a response within two weeks of those dates. Since the Gover Story Prize is predicated on "new and unpublished writing," simultaneous submissions cannot be considered. Writers selected for inclusion in Best New Writing will be notified by the editors in advance of publication. All others will receive an e-mail response to their submission.

Announcement of the Gover prizewinners are public events. The winenrs of the Gover Story Prize will be notified by e-mail as the judging unfolds, typically during the summer of each award year. The short-listed and winning nominations will be announced on this Web site. Writers selected for inclusion in Best New Writing will be notified by the editors in advance of publication. All others will receive an e-mail response to their submission.
